A-Sides, B-sides, EPs, LPs, CDs, and a new album

So today I was talking to one of my friends about the latest "album" coming out June 1st by Relient K.

It's called "The Bird And The Bee Sides."
Kindof.

The more I looked into it the more confused I got, "I thought Relient K was coming out with an EP?"

Well they are.

Here's what the band had to say about their new cd:

We are not recording the next full length Relient K record, however we have tracked thirteen new original songs that will be going on an EP. We're calling it The Nashville Tennis EP. We know its a lot of songs for an EP. Whatever.

As well as the EP, we're going to put out a B sides record. I'm not totally sure of how many tracks we're going to put on there, but we're aiming for 20+ for sure. As of right now, we're calling this The Bird And The Bee Sides.

The two albums together are going form a new release also called The Bird And The Bee Sides. We're hoping to release it on the earlier side of the summer.

So this brought up the question of "What the heck is a B-side?"

Most of you probably won't remember the time when old 7" vinyl records were used, but you probably have seen them [maybe?].

Back then not a lot of music could fit on a record, but both sides were usable.

A-side and B-side originally referred to the two sides of 7 inch vinyl records on which singles were released beginning in the 1950s. The terms have come to refer to the types of song conventionally placed on each side of the record, with the A-side being the featured song (the one that the record producer hopes will receive radio airplay and become a "hit"), while the B-side, or flipside, is a secondary song that often does not appear on a band's LP.

So wait, what's a LP again?

LP stands for "Long Playing" so, a long playing record. Not an A-side/B-side. [Equivalent to a normal cd today.]

Back to Relient K's album titled "B-side" - [generally], here's a list of tracks that would usually appear on a B-Side:

  • a different version (e.g., instrumental, a cappella, live, acoustic, remixed version or in another language/text) of the A-side or another track
  • another song from the same album, which the record company does not want to release on its own
  • a song not considered good enough for the album
  • a song that was stylistically unsuitable for the album
  • a song that had not yet been completed at the time of the album's release
  • a song that was intended to be [marketed as] a B-side after all
  • a cover of another song
  • in concept records: a song that doesn't fit into the story line.

Pretty cool right?

So wait, what about this EP?
EP means "Extended Play." Or, more basically, a record that was too short to be a LP.

Now-a-days, we don't use vinyl records anymore, but the references to them seem to have stuck.

And EP released now-a-days pretty much means a short[er] cd that's going to have a few songs that were either studio rejects, cut from a previous cd because there wasn't enough room, or remixes of songs already produced on other cds.
If you still have question, check out Relient K's EP.

So, Relient K is going to be releasing an EP and a B-side. AKA: A bunch of new songs, and some remakes on a few of the old songs.

Check it out here.
